Even if the PS3 got off to a slightly slow start in 2007, don’t let that fool you … the PS3 is gearing up for a big year with some hot releases expected. Here’s a rundown of three games coming out in ’08: EA’s NFL Tour, Free Radical Design’s HAZE, and Konami’s Coded Arms Assault.
Coming from EA Sport’s BIG division is what can be considered a spinoff of their hit NFL Street series. They have ditched the streets and beaches in favor of bigger show stages. No more playing with barrels and street sidewalls, you’re playing in front of huge crowds with pyrotechnics and the full 30 feet. There are also some advancements to the game: if a player initiates contact, they are given the opportunity to break the tackle, trip the receiver, or give their shot a little more “umph.” Street gamers will see the well-known “Gamebreaker” power-ups, and much of the game will remain unchanged, but an improvement in the appearance of the graphics. This game is expected to be out on January 8, so get ready!
Playing as a recruit in a corporate army owned by Mantel, a large supposedly peacekeeping organization, you are expected to play this game at least twice. Why twice? Well once on both sides, obviously this is because playing on Mantel’s side you realize that you, along with your fellow soldiers, are randomly injected with a drug called Nectar, but this leads to some unexpected consequences. The other time you sided with the rebels against whom you were fighting so cruelly. With great looking graphics and artificial intelligence that seemingly doesn’t feel useless … this gem will launch in the United States on January 18.
Konami released a game on the PSP early in the system’s life by the name of Coded Arms and after receiving success with the title, they went ahead and created another in the series for the PS3. Like HAZE, Coded Arms Assault is a futuristic FPS where you play as a soldier. Apparently your character is a young hacker who gained access to a system that he shouldn’t have been in and is in a virtual war. Bullets are replaced by hexes and enemies are vaporized. With the game running on the Unreal 3 engine, expect some great-looking graphics along with “digitized” effects. This game doesn’t have an official release date yet, but just from the looks of it, you’ll find out when it goes live.
